Nothing in life is free

This training is actually more a behavioral philosophy. I have used this training idea and it works well. To start all your dog needs to know is sit.

Anything the dog wants - food, a game - all must be paid for. For example, before the dog is allowed to go outside it must sit and wait patiently for a leash to be attached. Every time the dog gets up without permission you go back to the beginning. Our dog sits for everything, she has even created a few more complicated commands all by herself to get better treats. The dog learns that to get dinner she must sit and wait patiently until you allow the dog to eat, normally with a command like "okay".

You have to ignore attention seeking behavior as well. Whining and paws on your knee are reacted to with getting up or leaving the room, all without looking at the dog. The dog doesn't exist unless it is doing something you told it to. Many dogs catch on quick that they are no longer the center of the universe. You can expect some escalation of bad behavior right when you start. The dog is testing you.

This philosophy works well in that it reaffirms the human's status. Humans need to be the leader in a dogs world. Dogs are rarely happy taking over the leader spot, but will if they do not see anyone doing it.

If nothing else the dog gets really solid at sit and learns some self control.
