Cyprinids

Cyprinids include barbs, rasboras, loaches, and carp. The goldfish is a common member of the family. most are omnivorous, and some can be very aggressive. Others are supremely peaceful.

Common Characteristics:
Food: Varies, but almost all cyprinids will accept flake food, and many realish small live foods.
Breeding: All egg-layers, most by scatter method, a breeding tank is often a must.
Water Parameters:

Varies: pH notrmally between 6.5-7.5, depending on species. Softer water is almost always preferred, though most of this group are very hardy and adaptable.

Temperament: Varies a lot. Tiger Barbs are considered terrors with their fin-nipping tendencies, while cherry barbs ignore even a Betta's trailing fins. Also beware Botias.
Origins: Asia, most from streams and rivers.
A Few Exceptions:

White Cloud: Prefers cooler water 68-75° F, but a very easy fish to keep and spawn. Put many together, wait, often they will spawn in the maintinence tank and ignore the fry if well fed. Mine spawned in a plastic tub outside after a cool spell.

Tiger Barbs: Loosely schooling fish, should be kept in large groups, very aggressive. Not recommended for community tanks. More suited to a species tank with a few bottom feeders.
