Rainbowfish

Most Rainbowfish come from Australia, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia. A very colorful family of fish, most supremely suited to aquariums. They should be kept in groups of only one species per tank, as they can interbreed. Hybrids are frowned upon, for in the wild these fish would never meet, and most are interested in pure forms.

Common Characteristics:
Food: Fine grade, some vegetarian, and some small live food.
Breeding: These are mostly continuous breeders. They drop eggs several times a day. Eggs can be left in the maintenance tank, or be removed to a rearing tank. Most will hatch within 1-2 weeks. Many fish appreciate fine-leafed plants, or Spawning mops for breeding.
Caution: Many types of Rainbowfish can interbreed, creating crosses. These are undesirable fish in the gene pool.
Water Parameters:

Most Rainbowfish prefer harder water with a pH around 7-8.

Temperament: Most are schooling fish, and all should have more females in the school than males
Origins: Most come from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Far East, and Silversides are world wide.
Exceptions:

Celebese Rainbow Fish: These fish are brackish, and can only live full lives in brackish water.

Praecox Rainbow Fish: Soft Acidic Water is good for this species.
