Gouramis

These guys range widely in temperament. The commonly available ones are considered semi-aggressive. You can find more peaceful species, but many of them will have specialized water requirements as well. most people just go with one or a breeding pair to a tank.

Gouramis are mostly top dwelling fish. A few species will hang out lower, but most prefer the surface. They all can breath atmospheric air, so may survive things like a power outage better than some tank mates. Many can be kept at lower than average temperatures.

Breeding for most of these species is straight forward. You need clean water and a pair of them. Raising the fry is normally the problem. gourami almost all construct a bubble nest and have lots of tiny fry. The fry are so small feeding them is an issue. they also need the top of the tank heavily covered to avoid getting cold breathes of air, as the babies are air breathers like the adults.

Water requirements range from very acidic to not picky. They do all prefer clean water.
