Schistura Type Loaches (Semi-aggressive hillstreams)

Schistura are loaches, commonly seen in the same environement as Hillstreams. They prefer cooler well oxygenated water. They can be semi-aggressive with con-specifics, and have a tendency to stake out a territory and hide quite well until they are comfortable.

Schistura spec.

Schisturas are just recently becoming more commonly available. Recvent imports have been under the names Checkerboard Sand Loach, Cherr Fin Loach and Striped Sand Loach. They often follow a basic body plan of cylindrical body, with supporting fins, and a slow appearance. Most are rather pushy in character, making them more suited to semi-aggressive tanks. They like high oxygen content, and lots of hiding places. The more hiding places and oxygen you have, the more likely you are to see them.

Some of these species can be found in groups, as long as each has its own hiding place. Feeding is rarely a problem as most will eat whatever is offered, though they relish frozen worm treats.
