Species Profiles -> Catfish -> Striped Bulldog Catfish

Striped Bulldog Catfish (Chaetostoma cf_thomasi)

Synonyms: Bulldog Catfish
Stats: Adult Size: 3" (7.5 cm)
Temp: 70-75 F (21-24 C)
Tank: 24 " (60 cm) minimum
Requirements: Cooler water, current enjoyed.
Diet: Algae, Algae tablets and sinking foods.
Breeding: Not well documented, males blockier snout, river tank a possibility.

Additional: Best bet is a river tank with very clean water, high turnover. Males have larger anal fins, almost like fans, females, shorter anal fins. I just recently moved all my chaetos back together and found eggs. They are bright yellow, and were laid under a rock with the male guarding and fanning them. I was lazy and only managed to feed 1 baby to adulthood. I fed them lettuce and mashed up fish food on rocks. An algae flled tank likely would have been ideal, but I had removed the eggs to their own tank.
Sociability: Can't be mixed with conspecifics, otherwise doesn't care.
Related Spec: (Chaetostoma species) -- White Spot Bulldog Pleco
Special Info: These fish come from very clean fast flowing cool streams in South America, but are highly adaptable, and can live at tropical temps.
