| Requirements: | Acidic water, with caves and plants, arranged in darker colors. Some species require even more acidic water. |
| Diet: | Anything. Will take flake, live, frozen, or pellet. Very undemanding. |
| Breeding: | Easy. Males have longer fin extensions, also pointed tails, and females have red bellies. Prefer pots or tubes to spawn in. Fry can be fed prepared liquid food and crushed flake. |
| Sociability: | Fairly peaceful for a cichlid. Can be very aggressive when breeding, and rarely are fry lost to predators. |

Pelvicachromis subocellatus Related Species are almost as easy to spawn as this common variety. |
| Special Info: | This cichlid forms pair bonds, and can be very protective of its spawn. Fry can easily be raised in a separate rearing tank. |
