Species Profiles -> Cichlids -> Angelfish

Angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare)

Synonyms: ...
Stats: Adult Size: 6" (15 cm)
Temp: 75-82 F (24-28 C)
Tank: 32" (80 cm), at least 20 inches tall minimum
Requirements: Plants preferred, with plenty of open space, and subdued lighting. pH: 5.5-7.5, H: soft.
Diet: Carnivore mainly. Small live are much appreciated.
Breeding: Male and Female in good pairs will guard and rear their young. A sign of too much tank breeding is them eating their fry. Spawn on vertical surfaces. They come in many color morphs that can interbreed.
Sociability: Singly, pairs, or in large groups in large tanks. Medium sized tetras often make good tank mates, small tetras are snacks.

Examples being Black Phantom, Diamond, Black Neon, Red-Eye, and Black Skirt Tetras. These fish are considered semi-aggressive, and are cichlids so will eat small fish even if raised with them.

DO NOT MIX WITH FIN NIPPERS...
Related Spec: (Pterophyllum altum) Altum Angelfish
Special Info: This is one of the most popular aquarium fish, with many different color morphs. Can have Fungus problems with their fins. I pro actively treat any I buy from questionable sources for fin rot. Sensitive when first introduced.
