Species Profiles -> Lizards -> Crested Gecko

Crested Gecko (Rhacodactylus ciliatus)

Synonyms: Eyelash Gecko
Stats: Adult Size: 8"-10"
Temp: 70 F - 80 F
Cage: 24" wide and 24"tall minimum
Requirements: At least two nice dark hides, small water bowl and 1 humid hide. Most breeders keep them on paper towels. Theoretically they do not need UVB lighting as they are nocturnal, but there is some research debunking that. These guys need to be misted at least once a day. Supposedly they will only drink water droplets, but I provide each of mine with a water bowl with a rock in to to prevent drowning. These guys do not do well in high temperatures. Anything above 85 F can be a problem.
Diet: These guys will eat crickets, wax worms, and just about anything else that moves they can fit in their mouths. they will also eat supplemented baby food, or Crested Gecko Diet.
Breeding: Fairly easy, males have pores and lumps at the base of the tail. Males seem more common than females, or at least they are cheaper. Females need a rest each year and calcium supplementation.
Sociability: Males can not be kept together. Females might be able to be kept together, but you will have to watch for bullying. Juveniles should be kept alone. Male-female cage mates will breed.
Special Info: These guys have very nice personalities. Watch out for their tails. In the wild most of them are tail-less, as their tails once dropped do not regrow. They also come in many different varieties now due to captive breeding.
