Snake
Corn Snake (Elaphe guttata)
| Synonyms: | Red Rat Snake |
| Stats: |
Adult Size:
4-6 ft., females longer. Temp: 75 F - 85 F Cage: 36" minimum |
| Requirements: | At
least two hides, one on warm side of cage, one on cool. Large
water bowl they can soak in if needed. Mine seem to like climbing,
so driftwood is appreciated. These are active snakes I don't feel keeping an adult in a 30"x 12" cage is okay, but many people do it. |
| Diet: |
Live or Frozen rodents, size depends on age. Some morphs
prefer lizards as first meals. Babies can be fed up to twice a week, and adults every 7-10 days depending on food size. You will not get a corn snake to eat crickets, fish, or worms. They are not at all interested in these food items, and it is unhealthy to try to feed it to them. They hunt in nature based on heat and movement, those food items are cold-blooded and will not elicit a feeding response unless the snake is starving. |
| Breeding: | ... |
| Sociability: | Most Corn Snakes are non-aggressive and fine with handling. Juveniles can be quite squirmy though. |
| Special Info: | This
is a very good beginner snake. Very easy to feed, very easy
to handle. All Snakes are escape artists, but corns snakes, which are often bought as very young snakes, have taken this to an art form. |
