Species Profiles -> Snakes -> Kenyan Sand Boa

Kenyan Sand Boa (Eryx colubrinus loveridgei)

Synonyms: ...
Stats: Adult Size: 2-3 ft., females longer.
Temp: 75 F - 95 F
Cage: 24" minimum
Requirements: These guys burrow, and you will only really see them around feeding time. Their heads are flattish with a shovel look from the side, and the tip of its tails have modified scales that help it move through sand. I keep mine in Aspen Shavings with a heat lamp over half the cage to get the tank warm enough. they want low humidity. If your cage has good air circulation you can leave a small water dish in at all times, but otherwise just offer water a few nights a week.
Diet: Live or Frozen rodents, size depends on age.

This is my only snake I have to feed in the cage. It gets very nervous in a container with no cover, so I just put a large dish in the cage and put the mice on that to keep it from eating any bedding.
Breeding: ...
Sociability: This is my calmest snake. Even with handling necessitating digging the snake out from the bedding I've had no issues.
Special Info: These guys are so bad at climbing that you likely could have a cage with no cover provided it was tall enough. You have to watch them when handling because they will fall right off your hand if you're not paying attention.
