Painted Turtle (Chrysemys picta)
| Synonyms: | ... |
| Stats: |
Adult Size: 4"-10" shell Temp: 70-85 F Cage: 36" minimum |
| Requirements: | These guys grow to be large dirty turtles. They will need a tank as deep as they are wide (at least), and a haul out with enough space for every turtle to comfortably use it. Above the haul out you will need a heat lamp. They will need UVB lighting. |
| Diet: | Commercial turtle pellets, crickets and other insects, come veggies a possibility. Live fish also a possibility. |
| Breeding: | Males have wider tails and slightly concave lower shell surface. They need access to land to lay eggs. They dig a hole and there is not further care. |
| Sociability: | Similarly sized individuals can often be kept together as long as you make sure each is eating. Some turtles tolerate handling better than others. |
| Special Info: | These guys stay slightly smaller than red ear sliders and are probably the second most popular aquatic turtle. They do not need to be hibernated if they are pets. |
