Rehoming Tips:

Be Honest : If your dog has a few behavioral issues, not well leash trained, make sure that this fact is known. People prefer to know what they are getting into. It will also help keep your dog from getting abandoned due to undisclosed problems.

Adoption Fee : Ask for one. It doesn't have to be much, and you can donate it to your local humane society, but most people should be willing to give some fee for a healthy, vet checked animal. It also helps keep people from thinking your dog is disposable. A fee gives the dog at least some initial value until they fall in love like you did.

Plan Ahead : If you know you are going to be moving in two months, don't wait until you only have a week to find your pet a home. Waiting so long greatly decreases the likelihood of anyone being able to take your animal. No kill humane societies or rescues often have a waiting list at least that long.

Do Not Fear the Shelter : Often people would rather leave their animal to wander than bring them to a shelter. If you can possibly provide money, or supplies to care for the animal, you might be able to arrange for your dog to be held longer. If it is a smaller animal, donate the cage and supplies as well, and the likelihood of them being destroyed goes down even more.
